indigo

Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria)

The most famous dye stuffs for blue shades. The plant contains indigotin which is the source of blue pigment. Various species of indigo are spread all across Indonesia, but indigofera tinctoria is the most popular among dyers. In Bluesville, this is our main inspiration that leads us to explore more about natural dyes.

Jengkol

Jengkol (Archidendron pauciflorum)

Also knowns as Dogfruit, the fruit of this plant is famous among Asians as culinary ingredient although for some, the aroma is unbearable. This fruit can be dangerous when eaten in excessive amount due to the presence of djenkolic acid and amino acid. The symptoms range from spasmodic pain to acute renal failure. We use dried fruit rind to achieve the shade of khaki to brown. Fortunately, no smell is noticed in our final product after dyed in Jengkol.

mengkudu

Mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia)

This plant is used to achieve red shade by chopping and pounding certain parts of the root barks. Traditional Indonesian batik widely use mengkudu to produce brownish to purplish colors. Here in Indonesia, mengkudu is also famous for its medicinal properties. It is believed that the fruit can cure diabetes, liver diseases and menstrual cramps.

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana)

Mangosteen can be found in tropical area and believed to be originated from Indonesia. The rind of the fruit has dark purple shade with edible flesh. Indonesian believe that this fruit hold some medicinal properties. We gather the bad fruits from nearby market and use the dried rind to achieve beautiful grey to black shades.
