We try to use the best natural ingredients from our country for our garments as well as for the hardware. As for the button we use on our first collections, all come from a genuine mother of pearl shell also known as nacre, a composite material produced by some mollusks as an inner layer shell. The main characteristic of this type of shell is that they have a rainbow-like shine in their surface. This nacre material can also be found in different kind of mollusks.

We met with a shell artisan in Indonesia and bought some mother of pearl shell. Many types of mollusk can produce this kind of surface, as you can see in the pic above, they’re different kind of mollusk, but they both produce nacre.

This conch above is from Trochus family, known in Indonesia as “kerang lola” and is one of the most sought after mollusk that produce a beautiful nacre. Different from the other clam, lola usually produce a much plainer nacre and only got a bit of that rainbow shine on their surface. This results in a white shiny pearl-like buttons with just a little bit of rainbow shine hint.

As we go through the shell artisan’s workshop, there are lots of shell which can be used as an interesting hardware, which maybe we will use in our next season. The buttons we use from this artisan is a handmade button built with precision.

We are glad that we’ve come up this far and finally revealed what we’ve been doing this past year. The Experimentation is a result of near 1 year research in a new field completely new to us, mostly natural dyeing and traditional garment manufacturing. This collection, as the name suggest, is a result of our experiments, our learning process and this results is still in the very starting phase of our brand development as a whole. We’ve still got a long way to go.

The collections consists of different colors that we use in our experiments, respectively indigo produce rich blue shades, archidendron which results in brown shades, the rare morinda to produce pinkish red color, and mangosteen which results in grey shades. Apart from the colorants and natural dye experiments, we also dive into the world of traditional weaving, which can be found on our indigo dyed linen product and our bandana.

This past year is all about learning for us. We learned a lot and got mentored a lot by some of the most seasoned and experienced artisan in the traditional and natural garment field. We learn to dye and most importantly, to make the dye itself from an artisan which has been in the field of natural dyeing for more than 10 years. We sneak into the world of traditional weaving and garment manufacturing through one of the oldest weaving master in the country with more than 60 years of experience in the field.

By learning from these masters in their respective fields, we hope that we can gain the best knowledge available to produce wide range of quality products, as well as maintaining and preserving traditional garment manufacturing.

In the meantime, we hope that you enjoy that we’ve come up so far.
